Berlin Marathon Training Week 8

Welcome to Weekly Wrap.  Berlin Marathon training week 8 was a busy week back at work – we’re back to full-time! – plus a “maintain week” for marathon training.  My workouts were so-so this week, and I am looking forward to some recovery and relaxing time this week.  Hopefully.  Linking up with Holly and Wendy for this Weekly Wrap!

berlin marathon training recap

Monday

Run:  Easy 7 miles + strides.  Zone 2 Monday continues!  I’m making an effort to consistently train in my aerobic zone on these recovery days to ensure I am not going too fast.

Other:  I did SO well with my June goal of going to every Monday night core class in the month.  One of my July goals is to continue going to core class each Monday because I definitely saw some improvements. But… after my first day back in the office in over a month, long meetings, work piling up, and just an overall sense of blah, I just biked straight home.  Every Monday this summer will be this way, so I am going to have to find a different way to fit in a core class.  Or just do it on my own.  So far 0 for 1 on this goal.

Tuesday

Run: Track Tuesday.  I really mentally struggled with this.  It was a 4 mile descending tempo run, starting at half marathon pace and reaching 5k pace, followed by 3x thru 3-2-1oo meters.  Prior to the run, I pysched myself out thinking that I wouldn’t be able to get all the way down to 5k pace when I was so tired.  During the run I actually was descending and hitting the splits, but I still didn’t believe that I could make it through the last mile.  I ended up stoping after mile 3 to catch my breath and pep talk; after 30 or so seconds I kept going and was able to hit my pace.  I think had I been with people it would have been easier, and I just need to work on believing in myself.  After my workout, I coached the regular Sprint Tuesday crew.  Another big showing!

Other:  In the evening I went to On Your Mark Studios for a HIIT class.  I was excited to see Debbie there! Back in March, we met for coffee and I had asked her lots of questions about starting a food business (she started and owns No Denial Foods). It was a tough class, with box jumps (UGH) and a lot of upper body.  Tough but good!

Wednesday 7/4

Run:  Supposed to be a rest day, but I ran an easy 2 miles to the November Project 4th of July Watermelon Workout.  They had asked us to bring a watermelon to the workout which we used as a weight for crazy Ivans, lunge twists, burpee broad jumps and crab walks.  At the end we put all the watermelon in the lake (who knew that watermelon float?!) and sprint to retrieve them.  It was so ridiculous but such a blast.  After the workout, a bunch of people just hung out at the beach, eating watermelon for breakfast.

Other:  In the afternoon, I went to a friend’s rooftop BBQ to celebrate 4th of July.  I brought a vegan watermelon and feta salad to test on guests that I am now obsessed with. Planning to make it for lunches all next week!  Hoping to publish the recipe soon!

Thursday 7/5

Run:  Track workout with the Windrunners.  It was HARD, but a big confidence boost.  4x thru [.25@10k, 3x.25@5k].  I was please with my consistency.  10k pace ranged from 6:30 to 6:40, and 5k pace ranged from 6:05 to 6:20.  It’s so much easier to do speed workouts with a group!

Friday 7/6

Run:  Easy run + NP.  Today’s NP workout was 600 reps: 100 pushups, 100 rowboats, 50 burpees, 50 Hoisties, 100 split leg lunge jumps, 50 tricep dips, 25 Bojans, 125 jumping jacks.  I got through everything except the Hoisties and Bojans (both are partner workouts).

Other:  Back in May, a writer for Women’s Running Magazine contacted me.  She had found an old article of mine about overtraining and asked if I could answer some questions for a similar article that she was writing.  Super excited, I sent her my responses, but didn’t hear anything.  On Friday morning, a friend sent me the magazine article, with my quotesRead it here.

Saturday 7/7

Run: 17 mile long run.  I met the EDGE run group to tag along.  They had 13 miles to do, with 3 mile warmup and 10 miles alternating between .5mi at half pace and .5 mile recovery.  At the end, I just added on two more miles of surges and then 2 miles easy.  70 degrees and NO humidity felt glorious after the intense heat from the last few weeks!

Other:  After recovering at EDGE, I met my parents for brunch and the Cubs game.  It was SUCH a good game, with the Cubs rallying back from an five nothing deficit to win the game 8-7!  Go Cubs Go!

Sunday 7/8

Run: Easy 8 mile trail run with Jeremy and Yesenia to wrap up the week!

Berlin marathon training week 8 trail run

And that’s a wrap!  Berlin Marathon training week 8 brought me 61 miles. I only did one strength class this week, and had one ok speed workout, one great speed workout, and a solid long run.  All padded with easy miles, selling energy bites, writing coaching plans, and back to a full-time schedule for my actual job.  Juggling 4 jobs while training is TOUGH, and I am looking forward to a relaxing rest of my Sunday and recovery week next week!

OMG! We had a cabin on a lake when I was a kid. We’d put the watermelons in the water and push them under to see where (or underneath who) they’d pop up. It’s so cool you were quoted in a magazine article! I don’t subscribe to magazines any longer but I kind of miss the old school slick paper reading. It’s just not the same online. Thanks for linking!

That watermelon workout looks fun – though I’m not sure I could keep a grip on a watermelon! Congrats on the WR quotes.

Wow, that sounds like an amazing/insane week. Your NP workout is a reminder for me of why I haven’t made it out to join them. One day! Enjoy your day off

I love that you workout with November Project. I wish I could find one close to me as all the NP groups seem like an awesome bunch of people!

Great job on all of your workouts this week! We also had a break in the heat and humidity this weekend and it was so very much appreciated!!

We had a nice reprieve from the heat this weekend, too. Rumor has it, though, the heat is on its way back…no surprise there LOL That watermelon workout looks crazy but so fun!

How fun to do the workouts with watermelons. My mom’s boot camp did similar workouts with pumpkins in the fall. I’m pretty sure they didn’t eat them afterwards though…lol

I need a Cubs game so bad! I told my husband that today.

I look at you and I think you are so awesome–so if you send me some of your positivity and belief, I’ll take it! I hate struggling like this!

Looks like another great week of training for you. I need to do some more focused core training this week as well. Yay on the WR article it’s fun to see your quotes in print.
