Berlin Marathon Training Week 7

Welcome to Weekly Wrap.  Berlin Marathon training week 7, done!  There are 11 weeks of training left and things are heating up.  Literally. 95 degrees for the last few days here in Chicago. Linking up with Holly and Wendy for this Weekly Wrap and PattyErika, and Marcia for Tuesdays on the Run!

Monday 6/25

Run: Easy 7 miles in the morning with strides.  Met Howie on the path on the way down to Stair Mondays, but we were both so late that the workout was over when we arrived.  Whoops.

Other: In the afternoon, I watched the Spain World Cup game with some friends.  It was another intense game that ended in a 2-2 tie, but sent them to the next round.

Tuesday 6/26

Run: Track Tuesdays!  I did a hard but fantastic tempo run that really boosted my confidence.  2x .25, 4miles@ tempo, 2x.25.  The tempo portion made me nervous, but I nailed it.  Our crew grew yet again in size with two out-of-town guests joining us and a rare appearance by my brother!

Other:  In the pm, I attended my first On Your Mark strength training class.  The format of the gym is VERY different than what I am used to.  They use heavy weights and much more strength/power based moves compared to the endurance/stability moves in my usual classes.  We did a move called a Farmers Carry (carrying 50 pound kettle bells in BOTH hands up and down the length of the studio) and I thought my shoulders were going to rip out of my body.

Berlin Marathon Training Week 7 November Project Chicago

Wednesday 6/27

Run:  No run, just my usual strength class at EDGE in the morning followed by some PT exercises.  My hips and booty was sore from last night strength class.

Other:  SO COOL!  Ultrarunning Magazine accepted my Earth Day 50k piece and published it as a feature on their website!  I opened up my email to see their newsletter and my face was right there staring back at me!  You can read it here.  One of my goals for 2018 was to publish an article… does an online feature count?

Thursday 6/28

Run:  The first Windrunners track practice!  (Check last post to see who the Windrunners are).  We did 7x 800 – the first two at 10k, the next 3 at 5k and the final 2 at 5k build to mile.  Talk about HARD. We started off as a group but quickly splintered up.  Some of the other girls are incredibly fast, and I found myself at the back of the group with AJ.  What I loved though is the vibe was encouraging and motivating, which helped lessen the intimidation factor.  In the evening, I attended Emily’s strength class at On Your Mark. My arms and legs were noodles at the end.

Other:  Published a new recipe:  Vegan Aussie Bites These were inspired by my friend who requested that I take the Costco Aussie Bites and make them vegan with less fat and calories.  Each bite has 110 calories (compared to 130), 2g of fat (compared to 7g) and 3g of protein (compared to 2g).  They’re great for a healthy snack throughout the day, or as workout fuel.  It was fun to have a project in the kitchen!

Friday 6/29

Run: I ran along the lake with Nez in the morning to NP PR Day.  I was definitely feeling my workouts from yesterday, and knew I had a workout built into my long run, so I took it easy.  No PRs for me today.

Other: A November Project tradition is to take yearbook photos.  It’s something that all tribes do across the world.  NP Chi took our pictures earlier in May and they were finally released Friday!  Our theme was American Gladiators.

Saturday 6/30

Run:  Long run.  Holy heat and humidity!  It was 85 degrees for the 6am start and soon it reached the lower 90s.  My workout was 1.5 mile warmup, a 5 mile fartlek, then maintain a steady MP + 30-60s until reaching 16 miles.  I do ok in the heat relative to everyone else, so my workout went well.  That being said, I was a puddle by the end and looked like I dove straight into the lake.

Other:  In the afternoon, I went to New Belgium Brewery’s Tour de Fat with Shawna other EDGE members.  It was HOT and we only stayed for a few hours.  Then I met my friend Stacie and her fiance for dinner at Ema.  Stacie is a college friend who I hadn’t seen for about a year, and it was so lovely to catch up!

Sunday 7/1

Run: 10 easy trail miles with Fran, Andrea and Katie.  The shade blocked a lot of the heat and kept us cooler than yesterday, but the humidity was still oppressive.

Other:  Book club with the NP ladies!  We read The Beast, a reporter’s non-fiction account of about riding the Migrant Train in Mexico.  Full disclosure, I got about 3 pages into the book and then didn’t continue.  It just sounded way too intense for me.  Instead, I just went to try out a new recipe and learn from the discussion.

And that’s a wrap! Berlin Marathon training week 7 brought me 60 miles, with two solid speed workouts, a confidence boosting long run, new strength classes with the Windrunners and easy miles in between.

Can you believe it’s now July?  We are officially half way done with 2018. June mini goal recap:  I set the goal for myself to go to core class every Monday night in June and did it!  Even when I wanted to flake and just go home after work, I told myself that this would help with training.  I’ve noticed some difference but not much; doing core only one day a week will not really make quick changes.

New July mini goal: continue core class every Monday AND add in 2 On Your Mark classes a week.  I actually REALLY liked the heavy lifting on Tuesday and Thursday so I think those will be my days.  Plus, there’s some core work in those classes which will help.

How was your week?  How do you handle running in this intense heat? Let’s stay in touch!  Follow me on Instagram or Facebook for more food/fitness related posts.

Happy running,

Becca

Sounds like a fabulous week! Congratulations on having your piece published and on a confidence boosting track workout! That’s amazing!

Love those yearbook pictures, too! How cute!

It’s kind of always a heat wave here, so we just roll with it as best we can.

That’s quite a week! I have essentially no heat tolerance…luckily mornings here stay relatively cool, I just have to get up early enough.

You had a busy week! I am over this weather. I want it to cool down a little bit.

Oh that watermelon looks delish. And an online feature absolutely counts, well done! Congrats on a great week of runs, glad you handle the heat OK

Great work, well done! That weights workout was intense and so was running 60 miles – I’m in awe! (this is why I made a “just 7 miles” comment in my own post which someone challenged! I can see their point, too, though. And yes, getting your article published online is totally being published. Well done!

You had a great week! Carrying TWO fifty pound weights? Damn! I grumble about lifting a 40 lb bag of cat litter.;) I’ll have to check out the Aussie energy bites & yes, being published online counts!

I do not enjoy heat. I’ve sort of overcome it — at least sometimes — but I will be on the treadmill today. I’m not saying I’ll like it, but I didn’t have time to get out there early.

How cool your article was in Ultrarunning! What a fun gladiator pic!

Your gladiator pic is awesome! Congrats on getting published, that’s a great accomplishment. So far, the heat isn’t breaking me…but I love the heat so much more than the freezing cold of winter.

I’m so impressed with your heat tolerance and ability to keep it going this week. I did not know about Swallow Cliffs–I had to Google it. I swear, I’ve lived here forever, but there’s always something new.

I heard Chicago had the same weather as we did this week. Great job on keeping up with the training in that. You literally could not tell if I had or hadn’t jumped in the pool after my run this morning. My husband had to ask me. I was that wet. The yearbook photo is a fun idea! Thanks for linking.

Great job on your training this week, especially in this heatwave! Our heatwave started on Friday and it’s going to last all through next week – sigh 🙁

I love the November project yearbook photos – how fun!!
