Winter Training is Here | Weekly Wrap

Welcome to Weekly Wrap. Winter training has officially arrived!  Snowy runs and chilly temperatures – perfect for chili!  Recapping week 3 of my F3 Half Marathon training plan.  Linking up with Holly and Wendy for this Weekly Wrap.

Winter training is here!

The first snowy runs of the year are always magical.  That may be the only time you hear me say that, but it’s true.  This week was busy on the running front, but quiet on the blog front.  Unlike last week when I posted TWO new recipes (savory squash waffles and a fall vegan recipe round-up), this week I did not get a chance to post any recipes.  That didn’t mean the experimenting stopped however, as you will see from my weekend shenanigans.

Running-wise, I dove right into longer, more intense speed workouts.  The week ended in the best way possible, with the season’s first snowy trail run.  This was week 3 of my training for the F3 half marathon in January, which is just the start of a gradual build to the Ice Age 50 Mile in May.

Monday 11/12

Run:  Rest Day.  As a rule, I don’t take Mondays as a rest day.  But coach wanted to see if resting Monday would make Tuesday speed better.  I hate resting on Monday because I go into the office.  That means I am inside all day and have a lot of meetings.  Which, if you know me, indoors at a desk or in a conference room is not my kind of environment.  Running in the mornings makes me feel like I was at least outside for SOME portion of the day, before I am cooped up.  Needless to say, I did not have a good day.

Tuesday 11/13

Run:  Speed.  I hit the treadmill for 3x 1.5 mi intervals.  It was a long workout, and I was about nervous about hitting the paces, hence the tread.  Once I was into the workout though, I settled in and it went smoothly.  Added my agility and resistance exercises after.

Other:  Strength.  Traffic was TERRIBLE and I ended up missing my strength workout which put me in a foul mood for the rest of the night.  I went home and did some resistance band work instead but I was annoyed with the world and stopped to watch Friends reruns on Netflix instead.  Sometimes you just gotta shut it down.

Wednesday 11/14

Run:  Zone 2.  Easy 4 mile effort, nothing fancy.

Other:  Strength.  To make up for the class I missed Tuesday evening, I went to a Wednesday workout at OYM.  Emily, the trainer, had us pushing around sleds and sprinting on treadmills.  Her idea of fun.

Thursday 11/15

Run:  Speed.  Another treadmill workout.  The weather ended up being fine to run outside, but I had reserved a spot on the treadmill and didn’t want to cancel it and be charged.  This was a short speed session, just a .25/.5/.75/1 mile crescendo at varying paces.  Added my resistance band and agility exercises with Katie after.

Friday 11/16

Run:  Zone 2. Normally, I aim for 3 strength workouts per week, but I had only been to one so far.  I decided to skip November Project and do an easy run near my gym so I could attend a class.

Other:  Strength.  SO SO SO glad I went to this class.  The instructor was great and the class focused on mobility, core and upper back.  This may be my new winter Friday routine.  I’m torn because it means choosing between a social NP workout and a serious strength workout.

Saturday 11/17

Run: Coaching.  I coached the EDGE group run.  It was the first cold, snowy run of the training cycle and we had hill repeats on deck.  I was really nervous about how slippery the hills would be, but it turned out fine.  No falls!  Before leaving, I got to EDGE early to add on my resistance and agility work as a warm up.

Other: CHILI COOK-OFF!  This was SO MUCH FUN.  Mike, a friend from November Project, hosted a chili cook-off at his place.  8 people made chili to compete and about 25 people came by to judge.  I wanted a fair judging and requested that names be left off each chili (I didn’t want anyone going into it knowing that my chili was vegan because I think that automatically causes people to be biased).  We tasted chilis, had some drinks, played some games and had a great time.  Happy to say I came in second place!  Hoping to have the recipe on the blog after the Thanksgiving, but it will go out in my newsletter this week in the meantime.  Sign-up for the newsletter at the bottom of the post if interested.

Sunday 11/18

Run: Long Trail Run.  Pure magic.  It had been a while since Jeremy and I hit the trails together.  Too long.  Snow fell during the evening so the trails were in quiet, peaceful, pure white pristine condition.  We went for 12 miles, and had fun trying to set some Strava course records.

And that’s a wrap! Winter training is here and snowy runs will be a regular part of the routine once again.  I totaled 42.5 miles for the week with 2 speed workouts, 2 strength workouts and one lovely long trail run.  I was able to fit in my resistance exercises three times too – can’t neglect those even though I am (knock on wood) recovered from injury!

How was your week?  If you could be in a cook-off or bake-off, what would you make? Let’s stay in touch!  Follow me on Instagram or Facebook for more food/fitness related posts.

Happy running,

Becca

Great job this week! That sounds kind of annoying that you have to reserve a treadmill and get charged if you cancel. But i guess its good to know that you will get a treadmill! That snowy trail run sounds great. Congrats on getting 2nd place in the cook off!

What pretty snowy trails! I’ve never run in the snow. I actually had the opportunity twice last winter (very rare here) but didn’t take it. Congrats on placing 2nd in the cook off. I don’t cook nearly as much as I used to. But, my kids usually request quiche or roast with mash potatoes when they visit. Thanks for linking!

Congrats on second place! Agree with you re” no labels, also keeps people from voting for their friends
I think I’d enjoy snow runs if they were more picturesque. Usually here they’re just dirty mud quickly. First snow though is often pretty.
I LOVE Woodway treads. When I do Mile HIgh classes they make me so much happier. And yes, Friends or Will & Grace can be the best therapy

What trails did you run on? Looks beautiful! I’m having fun discovering all these new to me trails.

Congrats on the 2d place chili! Anxiously awaiting the recipe…
