Welcome to the Weekly Wrap. This week’s wrap is short and sweet. More 5k and marathon training, and back to school. More recipe testing and coaching. New year, same routines. I am a creature of habit and love a regular schedule. Getting back to my routines after the holidays was a much needed mental reset. Linking up with Holly and Wendy for this Weekly Wrap.
Monday 1/7
Run: Speed workout!  The Windrunners voted on the best time to do speed. The winning time? 5am on Monday morning. WOOF. But it was a great workout, I’m really glad that our team speed routine has started again. I’ve found that I can work so much better when I run with the team.
Tuesday 1/8
Run: Easy 6.  Coached Sprint Tuesday in the morning and ran easy miles while they did speed. It was a good-sized group for post-holidays.
Other: Strength at OYM.
Wednesday 1/9
Run: Easy 6.  Another easy run – but this was a total mental struggle. I didn’t get a chance to run in the morning because of work, so I waited until the afternoon. My body and mind did not want to get out the door for 6 miles. The entire run I negotiated with myself. I turned around after two miles thinking, “At least I will get 4 miles,” and then I kept turning around every half mile to trick myself into running all 6. It wasn’t pretty but it worked!
Other: Strength.  Single Leg Day is always my favorite class at EDGE.  Robyn kicked my butt!
Thursday 1/10
Run: Tempo.  Took to the treadmill again for an easy tempo. For the past few weeks I’ve been running crescendos on the treadmill, and Thursday morning was no different. 2×1.5 miles starting at marathon pace and ending at 10k pace. After, I ran through ladder drills with Katie to celebrate her birthday!
Other: Strength class at OYM.Â
Friday 1/11
Run: Rest Day.  Total sloth day. I slept for 10 hours – TEN HOURS! It felt glorious. After work, I used the rest day to start watching the Marvelous Mrs. Maisel which I am now in love with! This will be my new rest day treat.
Saturday 1/12
Run: Long run.  Jeremy and I went running together for the first time in a MONTH. It was wonderful to catch up and the marathon pace surges felt like a breeze. This was the first time in a long time that my long run was sub 8 minute pace and it felt GREAT!
Other: Dare2Tri.  After the run, I volunteered at Dare2Tri’s run clinic as a run guide. I’ve been wanting to volunteer with them for so long, but I am finally making it a priority. It was a blast! Later that afternoon, I met up with some friends for a holiday bar crawl. Since everyone had been so busy in December, we decided to wait until January. It had been a few months since I had seen a few of the people on the crawl and I really enjoyed catching up.
Sunday 1/13
Run: Easy 5 miles.  Chicago got about 3-4 inches of snow yesterday afternoon and evening, so I opted to stay local instead of driving to the trails. It was so slippery – I still wore my trail shoes and ran in the street.
Other: Book club! We read The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood. It’s a classic, yet I had never read it before. Our group had mixed feelings about the book and many, myself included, couldn’t decide if we liked the book or not. I think the consensus was “I would recommend it to others as thought-provoking but not a happy read.” Have you read it before?
And that’s a wrap! 47 miles this week, with two solid speed workouts and a few strength sessions. New year, same routines, but that’s just how I like it. When I have the predictability of a routine, it’s easy for me to settle down and progress. Anyone else like having the same structure to their weeks?  How was your week? Let’s stay in touch! Follow me on Instagram or Facebook for more food/fitness related posts. Â
Happy running,
Becca
5 am speedwork? Ouch! I would not survive it. I ran in my trail shoes yesterday — there were a few icy patches, so I was happy I had them on. No slipping like the day before!
I read the Handmaid’s Tale a really long time ago. I remember liking it at the time, but yes, definitely not a happy read.
Sounds like a great week of training! Love that name, Dare2Tri. I did my first triathlon last year and it did take a ton of nerves to commit to it. I ended up loving it, and look forward to another one this year.
I read the Handmaid’s Tale many years ago–I had such mixed feelings about it. It’s interesting how it’s made a comeback. Kind of creepy, right?
Looks like you had a great week. That early morning Monday speedwork–nothing like starting the week with a bang!
Very creepy book, but one of those that I’m glad I read and thought about//discussed these topics. Hope you’re having a good week!
I’m like you, I love a good routine. I only started back at work today after the holiday and it was actually a welcome relief as this means I get my structure back in all aspects of my life, running included. Your Wednesday Run had me laughing – well done on all the negotiation that was going on! Run done!
I like your strategy of turning around (repeatedly) to fool yourself into running longer. I have done that before, but I do it when I”m out on the streets…just an “extra lap” around a random block now and then is my mind game 😉
Haha exactly! It’s silly but it works!
5am on a Monday?!? Total woof! I agree with you, I like getting back into routine with meal prep, sleep, etc. Vacations are nice but it throws me off!
Well I personally would never vote for 5 am on Monday for anything!! Way to get it done. 10 hours of sleep sounds amazing. I never seem to be able to sleep that long even when I don’t have to get up
Minneapolis is one of the only Midwest cities that didn’t get snow! (I’m not complaining!)
Please be careful out there if it’s slippery!
Sounds like an awesome week- 5 am on a Monday, yowsa! Probably felt so good to get it done though 🙂
Definitely felt good, but I was sooo hungry the rest of the day haha
I absolutely agree with you on the mental reset of a routine. I read it as mental rest at first, which is also true. It’s exhausting to be out of routine
I enjoyed Handmaid’s Tale, but yes it’s disturbing. And resonant.
I’m also a creature of habit – I just really love consistency!
Great job on your workouts and mileage this week! Love that you are part of a book club. I need to see if I can join one in my area. One of my goals is to read more this year.
I used Meetup to initially find a book club and then this book club started out of November Project. You’re in quie a few fitness communities, maybe start asking around there to see what interest would be like?
