Marathon Training During Expo West

Welcome to the Weekly Rundown. This week I was out at Expo West with Erica.  I am still out in L.A., so this is going to be a short run down of the week.  I want to spend as much time with my dad and in the sunshine today as I can!  Linking up with hosts Deborah and Kim for this recap of my marathon training during Expo West.

Monday 3/3

Run: Team Workout.  My body felt wrecked.  The combination of the build week and sickness did me a number.  I warmed up with the team but decided to just run easy instead.  After, I felt loose enough to go to a strength class, and then immediately booked a massage appointment for the evening.

Other:  Massage with Justyna.  She is a miracle worker and I felt like a million bucks after.

Expo West Week

Tuesday 3/4

Run: Easy. I felt much better after the massage, but with the long run tomorrow, this was just some easy miles.  I decided to turn this week into a volume week.  No specific speed workouts, just all aerobic easy miles.

Wednesday 3/5

Run: Long run.  The biggest obstacle with marathon training during Expo West was fitting in my long run.  Knowing that I would be at the Expo from 9-6 each day, I opted to move my long run.  20 miles on the treadmill before hopping on a plane.  It was brutal, but necessary!  And honestly it wouldn’t feel like winter training without a monster long run on the treadmill.  Katie joined me for a portion of it – last year we did the exact same thing, 20 miles and all!

Other:  Headed to Expo West.  I was eager to attend Expo West again this year. Last year was wonderful.  I met many brands that I then had the privilege to work with throughout the rest of the year.  Erica invited me to stay with her again, and this time Kaila of Healthy Helper joined us.  I will do a full-blown recap of the show later this week, but, in a nutshell, it was a blast!

Expo West Week Training

Thursday 3/7

Run: Rest.  After the monster mileage on the treadmill yesterday, I had a rest day today.  On his was to a business appointment, my dad dropped me off at the Expo where I met Erica and Kaila for a full day of sampling! Let the Expo begin!

Friday 3/8

Run: Nuun 5k.  Like last year, Nuun Hydration hosted a 5k race.  A few members of November Project LA were there too, and it was nice to see them again.  This year, it was at a golf course.  I hadn’t raced on grass since high school, and I loved the change!  Jesse Thomas, one of the founders of Picky Bars and Lauren Fleshman’s husband, was there too. He won for the men, and I won for the women, so we took a finisher’s picture.  It as a great way to start the morning!

Other: Expo West Day 2! Today, I focused on the Hot Products section since they were closing at the end of the day.  I also met with a PR agent to take me around to some brands that they represent.  Towards the end of the day, I met up with Erica.  She swung us passes to a VIP happy hour complete with massages.  It was such a treat!

Expo West Training 5k

Saturday 3/9

Run: Easy 6.  Another easy short run in the morning before the last day of the Expo.  Erica and I tried to run to the same path we used last year, but couldn’t find the entrance.  We just toured the neighborhood instead.  After we met up with Ashley, Jenny and Bopha for the last day at Expo West.  I can’t wait to recap all the food and trends!

Other:  Expo West Day 3.  On the last day, we met up with Ashley, Jenny and Bopha before heading back to L.A. in the late afternoon.  I went to a mix of big and small brands today, before revisiting some of my favorites.  After, Erica was kind enough to drive me to LA on the way to her in-laws.  I met me dad and we went to Sage, an eclectic vegan restaurant near the hotel.  One of the options on the menu was priced higher than the others and the extra proceeds went to the Kiss the Ground Farmland Program.  I loved seeing that on the menu! (And it tasted great too!).

Sunday 3/10

Run: Easy 7 miles.  Another easy run to round out the week.  So glad to have had a volume week with no taxing workouts.

Other:  Tourist with Dad.  My dad and I walked around Santa Monica Pier and La Brea Tar Pits today before having a late lunch at Cafe Gratitude.  Spending the day with him was such a treat!  And Cafe Gratitude was DELICIOUS.  Everything on their menu was a positive word, for example “joyful.” To order, you spoke a positive affirmation, “I am joyful.”  The waitress also supplied a question to spark conversation.  It was, “What gives you strength?” This place was right up my alley, and the food was fantastic.

Expo West recap

And that’s a wrap!  I totaled 50 miles for the week, even with the travel.  Just one more build week before tapering down for Shamrock Shuffle and the Milwaukee Marathon.  I can’t wait to recap everything from Expo West.  After a few days of decompressing, that is.  Be on the lookout for it soon!

How was your week?  What gives you strength?  What are you most excited to hear about from Expo West? Let’s stay in touch!  Follow me on Instagram or Facebook for more food/fitness related posts.

Happy running,

Becca

20 miles on the treadmill!!! Insane! and really really badass!

it sounds like the week was amazing – the expo, the people, your dad, the food – I think I would love Cafe Gratitude!

What gives me strength? this is a really hard question to be honest! I don’t know how to answer it. BUT I want to think about it and figure out an answer.

I honestly know nothing about Expo West, but I’m not in the US so that probably makes sense. I’m just glad you had such a great time!

Aside from 20 miles on the treadmill, it sounds like a fantastic week! Definitely can’t wait to hear what brands you met up with & what you sampled.

Wow, congrats on winning the Nuun 5K. That’s awesome. Probably a totally different experience than that 20M on the TM – sheesh! Glad you had a great time.
