5k Speed Training | Weekly Wrap

Welcome to Weekly Wrap. This week was the first in my foray into the 5k speed training territory. I raced a benchmark 5k on Saturday and it went really well! Linking up with Holly and Wendy for this Weekly Wrap.

Monday 12/3

Run: I was not feeling the greatest after a day of travel so I took the day off work. By noon, I was feeling better and went out for a runch (lunch run). I rarely run in the afternoon but it felt great! Momma N sure was windy though.

Tuesday 12/4

Run: Speed. I had 8 quarter-mile repeats at goal 5k pace. Luckily, Sprint Tuesday had the same workout! #Coachperk, ha! I was pleasantly surprised – I ended up dipping into the sub 6 min pace for 3 of the 8 intervals. I left the morning feeling much more confident.

Other: HIIT Another Tuesday night workout class at OYM. According to my results from Inside Tracker, I need to add more HIIT style workouts to my routine to build more muscle, so these Tuesday nights will be a regular in rotation.

Wednesday 12/5

Run:  Long Run. Since I planned to race Saturday, I moved my 10 mile long run to midweek.  I woke up SO SORE.  I couldn’t believe how tired my hamstrings and calves felt from the speed work yesterday.  Because of this, I opted to sleep in and complete my long run when I got home for lunch.  A runch broke the day up and I really enjoyed it.  Plan on seeing more of these as the winter darkness drags on.

Thursday 12/6

Run:  Easy.  Two days in a row of efforts (speed then long run) meant that today was just easy miles.  I also was able to connect with Katie for our speed drills and then completed my resistance band exercises.

Friday 12/7

Run:  Off Day.   Skipped NP and slept. No regrets.

Other: One of a Kind Show After work, I met up with my brother and friend Amanda to go to the One of a Kind Show. I always love this craft show and each year the vendors amaze me with their creativity. I was excited to see Debbie’s booth and her new Posh Nosh packaging. (Debbie had helped me earlier this year when I was starting my food business).

Saturday 12/8

Run:  5k Race!   Holy bananas, I forgot how HARD 5ks are! The last time I raced a 5k was the Bucktown 5k in 2016. Jeremy and I went out to the Brookfield Zoo for this race. Initially he was going to bring his family and make a day at the zoo, but it was cooooold. I’ll do a further recap later in the week, but let’s just say it went way better than expected. I ended up winning first place female and receiving one of the most absurdly large trophies I’ve ever gotten. It was a good starting point for my upcoming 5k speed training (still need to shave about a minute from my time), and I can already identify areas to improve.

Other: Book club! This month, Ladies Who Lit read Educated: A Memoir. The author grew up in a Mormon household, suffered abuse, and never attended school. Eventually she makes her way to college and beyond. I found the book fascinating. At the meeting we discussed the ways in which we had formed identities within and apart from our families, toxic and healing relationships, and mental illness. I had a great time.

Sunday 12/9

Run: Easy Trail miles Initially was going to meet Al for a run, but I opted for a solo run. It had been a really long time since I did a solo trail run. Or maybe it’s been more recent than I remember. Either way, I went out to Swallow Cliff for one lap on frost covered trails.

Other: Yoga + Reflections. Laura and Fran, two fellow coaches at EDGE, led a yoga and reflections workshop in the mid-morning. We thought back on how 2018 went and thought about what we would be bringing with us into 2019 and what we would be letting go. I have done a recap of the year (2017, 2016, and 2015), so I valued this think-time.

And that’s a wrap for the first of many 5k speed training recaps! I totaled 38 miles for the week with a high focus on speed.  Winning the 5k was definitely the surprise of the week.   Just a few more weekly wraps left for 2018 before my year end reflection.  I can’t believe the year is wrapping up – where has the time gone?

How was your week?  Let’s stay in touch!  Follow me on Instagram or Facebook for more food/fitness related posts.

Happy running,

Becca

Congrats on a speedy 5k and winning that humongous first place trophy! What will you do with it? 🙂 (In that pic, at first glance I thought you were wearing Christmas Mickey ears and I thought “how festive!”.) Educated sounds like a fascinating read. Thanks for linking!

Wow! You’re first 5k in a long time sure panned out well! I’m so happy for you. Your speed is coming right back!

Congrats on your 5k win! what a confidence booster.

The book you read sounds fascinating. And all the time you’ve spent in reflections — seriously, I don’t know how you even have time for it!

Congrats on a great 5K race and winning first in your age group! I’m also loving that large trophy!

Love that you’re able to use your Inside Tracker results to know what you need to do in order to hit your fitness goals. I used them before years ago but I should definitely get re-tested.

That trophy is insane. Congrats!
Glad you recovered quickly after travel. When we had a gym accessible across the street from the office I loved quick lunch workouts. They’re such a nice balance to the day

Awesome job on that 5K, and the trophy is nice! DO you have a proper mantle to place it upon? 😉 I’m excited to follow you on your 5K training. I have never trained for a 5K, other than my first-ever 5K, but back then, the 5K distance was like a marathon to me LOL

Congrats on the 5k win! 5k’s are so hard, ha!

What a lovely mix of trail/road/strength/yoga…I am so impressed!

Do you always go home for lunch? That would be so nice to do runches..that’s one thing I haven’t been able to do, I just have too many meetings most days; I suppose I could block off my calendar and fit in at least 45 minutes of running. You are very lucky! Running in daylight REALLY helps with watching for slick spots too.

Congrats on that 5k win! No surprise, tho! I agree with you, 5ks are hard. I’m finding that I’m doing better at them than at longer distances, tho. My endurance is just shot. It’s kind of fun to let it go and just run, isn’t it?

I loved Educated. I did read that her family has come out against her and denied everything she said. But wow, what a book!
